Incumbent Athens mayor chides rival over remarks

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis on Friday chided Aris Spiliotopoulos, his New Democracy rival in May’s local elections, after the deputy likened Athens to Kabul in the wake of Thursday’s bomb explosion outside the Bank of Greece.

“He is undermining the city’s effort to improve in terms of tourism,” Kaminis said on Skai Radio.

The incumbent mayor also criticized his rival for referring to protesters as being “half-crazy.”

Kaminis said he was opposed to the city center being shut by small demonstrations but added that protesters should be treated with respect.
