May strike at private schools

Teachers at private schools in Greece are to stage a rare strike on Wednesday, May 14, followed by work stoppages on May 21 and 22 at junior and senior high schools only.

The Federation of Private School Teachers (OIELE) said its members would be walking off the job because the multi-bill passed through Parliament on March 31 so Greece could receive further bailout tranches makes their profession more precarious.

According to OIELE, the omnibus bill contains provisions that make it easier for employers to sack teachers and reduces the compensation fired educators can claim. OIELE said it is considering an appeal to the Council of State and its members could refuse to invigilate end-of-year exams.
