Ferries to start using LNG

Greece’s coastal shipping sector has set a target of having at least one liquefied natural gas-fueled vessel operating in the next two years, according to a meeting on Wednesday between Merchant Marine Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis and sector associations.

The aim of the meeting called by the minister was to coordinate all parties involved and examine the necessary policies to make the use of LNG as a fuel possible by coastal shippers.

Varvitsiotis stated that the use of LNG by ferries will contribute to the reduction of the sector’s operating costs, boost competitiveness in the industry and cut prices for consumers. At the same time it will serve the target of the country’s harmonization with European policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions and switching to the use of environmentally friendly fuel.

The ministry agreed to reduce bureaucracy and to coordinate consultations between the responsible bodies.
