Discovering the world around us

What do the Parthenon, a tube of toothpaste and aluminium window frames have in common? Geology, which provides us with the raw materials for many of the products we use on an everyday basis, even baby powder.

Have you ever wondered whether there is an echo in the universe? The universe’s mysterious sounds are constantly there yet we cannot hear them because they come in electromagnetic rather than acoustic waves.

The 1st Athens Science Festival, which ends on Sunday at the Technopolis cultural complex in central Athens, is designed in the manner of similar festivals abroad and invites the public to discover the world around them, ask and receive answers to their questions, listen to interesting lectures and discuss with scientists. Children can experiment, play and participate in lab experiments.

The event’s main goals are the presentation of the high-caliber scientific work being done in Greece, the creation of new paradigms in the scientific field and the promotion of the sciences by showcasing their myriad attractions.

The festival is divided into themes including physics, chemistry, biotechnology and genetics, geology, math, sustainable growth, history and philosophy, health, nutrition, astronomy, technology, robotics and science in the arts.
