Slow start to the week for local stocks

Much as National Bank buoyed the banks index and the closing auctions contained stock losses, the bourse benchmark spent the entire session in the red on Monday, while turnover was the lowest in the last 45 sessions, partly due to the bank holiday in the UK. However, it also reflected investors’ reluctance to take any further risks.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 1,232.52 points, shedding 0.62 percent from Friday’s 1,240.16 points. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX 25 contracted 0.48 percent to 396.67 points, although small-caps added 0.25 percent.

Titan Cement outperformed among blue chips, posting a rise of 3.41 percent, while National gained 1.78 percent, helping the banks index to register gains of 0.46 percent.

The leading losers were EYDAP (down 8.64 percent), Motor Oil (3.67 percent), Mytilineos (2.80 percent), Intralot (2.79 percent), Coca-Cola HBC (2.76 percent) and Marfin Investment Group (2.26 percent).

In total, 44 stocks went up, 65 sustained losses and 26 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to just 68.1 million euros, compared with last Friday’s 120.2 million. It is expected to grow on Tuesday.
