UN envoy chairs meeting in New York over FYROM name talks

Matthew Nimetz, the United Nations special representative in talks aimed at settling the name dispute between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), is to meet with envoys from the two countries in New York on Tuesday in an effort to restart stalled negotiations.

Diplomats Adamantios Vassilakis and Zoran Jolevski will meet with Nimetz separately first and then together in a bid to push forward efforts to reach a mutually acceptable solution for FYROM’s name.

The talks come in the wake of a snap election in FYROM, which swept the incumbent, Nikola Gruevski, a hardliner on the name issue, into another term.
