NERIT president replaced two days after first broadcast

Less than 48 hours after NERIT, the successor to public broadcaster ERT, went on air, its president and managing director was removed from his post on Tuesday.

Former Columbia University professor Giorgos Prokopakis was replaced by Athens University academic Antonis Makrydimitris as head of the executive board. Members of the board claimed that Prokopakis had failed to cooperate properly with NERIT’s supervisory council, a charge which the business consultant and ex-candidate with the pro-business Drasi party denies.

“This is absolutely absurd,” Prokopakis told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency. “Some powers do not want this channel.”

Prokopakis also expressed anger at the fact that the failings of other board members meant that the first thing NERIT broadcast was an old Greek movie. He also claimed that NERIT has bypassed the normal appointment procedures for a public body in some cases, granting jobs to people who did not fulfill the requirements demanded by the Supreme Council for Personnel Selection (ASEP).
