Scuppered education
No one should be surprised by the successive reports showing Greece ranking at the bottom of international charts rating education standards after a push to introduce reforms at the country’s universities and technical colleges was allowed to founder because the responsible ministry’s political leadership did not have the courage and the nomenklatura at the universities reacted.
Universities remain a hotbed of illegal activities, cronyism and give-and-take between different vested interests. In what other country, after all, would an attack by a bunch of hooligans against an academic on university grounds be met with such detachment?
Of course there are exceptions in the individuals and departments fighting for the institutions to achieve excellence.
The longer Greece delays fixing its educational system the longer it will take to become more competitive. Moreover, we cannot allow citizens to see the sacrifices they have made for their children’s education going to waste.
