Dozens of university administrative staff who had been placed in a labor pool last year and were expected to be laid off now are to remain in the reserve for another eight months, the Education Ministry has decided.
Administrative employees from the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) and the University of Ioannina, who saw their job positions scrapped last September, are less fortunate as their period in the labor pool ends on May 24 and no alternative employment for them has been found.
A total of 1,158 university staff from eight institutions were forced into the public sector mobility scheme on September 24. This prompted a lengthy strike at universities. Academics took part in the protest, forcing the abandonment of the fall semester.
The Education Ministry has now issued a circular to clarify that due to a number of amendments that were passed during that time, the eight-month labor reserve period did not begin at the same time for all university administrative staff.
As a result employees at the University of Athens and the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), also known as the Athens Polytechnic, have eight months ahead of them before they face the prospect of being made redundant.
