Venizelos plays down SYRIZA election results

PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos held a televised news conference on Monday to accuse SYRIZA of failing to live up to expectations in the first round of voting in local elections.

He accused SYRIZA of trying to generate a false impression that it came out on top in Sunday’s first round of local elections.

“You saw how they tried to create the feeling of a victory, that a forceful momentum was with SYRIZA but in the end this proved to be a mirage based on exit polls,” said Venizelos.

He insisted that the government could survive Sunday’s European vote, which SYRIZA says should be a referendum on the coalition. Venizelos said that the two-party administration should aim to ensure “progressive stability” after the elections.
