Laid off cleaners block entrance to Finance Ministry

Fired Finance Ministry cleaners blocked the entrance to the ministry on Thursday protesting the Greek government’s failure to comply with an Athens court decision earlier this month that they be reinstated.

Police are at the scene, but have not intervened.

According to a May 12 decision by the Athens Court of First Instance, the cleaners won a class action case against the conservative-led government to get their jobs back. The court ruling found that 397 cleaners who made the complaint were wrongfully suspended from their jobs eight months ago, as part of a government staff reduction program.
