Finance minister supports performance-based pay
Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras on Tuesday argued in favor of civil service salaries being based on performance in a document submitted to Parliament.
Stournaras was responding to a question by independent deputies Yiannis Kourakos and Nikos Nikolopoulos in regards to whether the ministry’s general secretary for revenues, Haris Theoharis, receives bonuses.
Stournaras argued that basing the civil service pay scale on performance could provide a motive for state employees to work more efficiently and in a goal-oriented manner.
In response to the particular question regarding Theoharis, Stournaras said that the general secretary does not receive any bonuses but is entitled to one if his department exceeds revenue targets and if this is approved jointly by the ministers of Finance and Administrative Reform. He added that Theoharis currently receives a monthly salary of 4,750 euros.
