Some Greek media ‘tried to emotionally blackmail voters before polls’

Greece’s broadcasting watchdog said on Tuesday it would investigate claims that some media and journalists had attempted to emotionally blackmail their audiences ahead of Sunday’s European and local elections.

The National Council for Radio and Television (ESR) said it would look into the complaint made by the Athens journalists’ union, ESIEA, which spoke of voters being presented with “extortionate dilemmas.”

“Apart from being directed against democratic institutions, these isolated cases embody an ignorance and abuse of the rules of journalistic ethics and we make it known that we will not leave them unchecked or unpunished,” said ESIEA, without identifying any specific cases.
