Debts to state grow by over 1 bln euros every month

Finance Ministry data published on Thursday concerning state debtors came as a shock, revealing that almost 2.5 million people are unable to pay their taxes. As a result, the new debts created in the first four months of the year came to 4.3 billion euros, or 1.07 billion per month.

Perhaps most worrying for the ministry’s top officials is that the coming months will be chock-full of tax obligations, as payment notices for the new Single Property Tax will be sent out in July, payable in monthly installments until December. This will be in addition to the income tax installments.

The ministry’s leadership is expected to point out to the country’s creditors the huge tax burden on Greek households as it attempts to renegotiate the terms of the payment plans proposed, which have seen a particularly low take-up rate among debtors.

On the other hand, among the prior actions required for June is the drafting of a joint action plan for the collection of expired debts to the tax authorities and social security funds, whose total has grown to 65.9 billion euros according to the ministry data published on Thursday.
