Preferential treatment
There are times when the justice system, or to be more precise, judges, need to provide the public with some kind of explanation regarding decisions they take that have an effect on society’s interests.
One of the most recent examples where this is necessary is the decision by a court not to immediately impose the sentences handed out in the case regarding the structured bonds scandals and to allow the 13 people accused of serious crimes to evade jail while their appeals are processed.
The average Greek who may be facing the threat of prison because of unpaid debts to the state feels nothing but anger when learning that people found guilty of embezzling millions of euros in public money are granted special treatment.
The leadership of the Supreme Court has shown that it can be tactful and responsible in other cases of a similar nature. It’s a shame it hasn’t done so here.
