Official’s departure leads to tax system disruption

Taxpayers trying to submit their annual income tax declarations or seek papers regarding their tax data were frustrated over the weekend as procedures were suspended in the wake of the forced resignation of the Finance Ministry’s general secretary for public revenues, Haris Theoharis, last Thursday.

Officials said the government’s online Taxisnet system, which was suspended on Monday, would be operational again as of Tuesday.

Just a few minutes after Theoharis’s controversial departure last Thursday, the government issued an announcement on its opengov.gr website seeking a replacement.

The departure of the 42-year-old IT specialist from a role created in 2012 under the instructions of Greece’s international creditors in a bid to make tax collection more independent prompted the European Commission to express “serious concern.”
