Staying the course

Monday’s government reshuffle could easily lead one to the wrong conclusions.

The small minority of ministers who in previous months had attempted to take on the country’s vested interests were sent packing or put in charge of different portfolios.

One hopes that the moral lesson to be drawn here is not that we ought to reward lazy politicians or those who go to pains to avoid shouldering any of the inevitable political cost. Otherwise it is unlikely that we will see a government minister promote a painful albeit necessary reform, or defend it in public, ever again.

Greece’s new conservative-led administration will obviously have to rely on a very small number of politicians with a good name and a willingness to work hard.

They will have to shut out the noise and work with courage and determination, because their performance will decide the country’s future in the crucial months ahead.
