University staff at center of first cabinet row

Just a day after the new cabinet was sworn in, the first disagreement broke out between Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and newly appointed Education Minister Andreas Loverdos.

The conflict of opinion arose over the number of university administrative staff that will be rehired after being placed in a labor reserve last year. Mitsotakis insists that only 500 positions should be made available, while Loverdos wants 800 spots to open up. A total of 1,136 university employees were removed as part of the public sector mobility scheme.

The matter has now been referred to Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Deputy Premier Evangelos Venizelos.
