Wi-Fi project is under way

A project announced by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras last November to improve wireless Internet access across Greece is now getting under way.

An invitation for expressions of interest in the tender was published on Tuesday so that it can be incorporated in the regional programs of the European Union-subsidized National Strategic Reference Framework.

The tender concerns the operation of 4,000 Wi-Fi spots around the country. The project is expected to unlock resources of 25 million euros.

It will have to be completed by the end of the year so that it can operate for the whole 2015 with EU funding.

The original plan had been for 5,000 Wi-Fi hotspots, but this figure was trimmed in line with the available resources.
