Retroactive pension cuts for retired judges deemed unconstitutional
Retroactive pension cuts imposed on judges, prosecutors and members of the State Legal Council were unconstitutional and in violation of the European Convention on Human Rights, the plenary session of the State Audit Council ruled Monday.
In an almost unanimous decision following a closed-door session on Monday, judges deemed that reductions from August 1, 2012 – imposed as part of the country’s commitments to foreign lenders – were against the constitutional principle of proportionality and the constitutional rule of equality.
It is estimated that more than 150 million euros will have to be returned to retired judges.
