Allegations against ELSTAT head are ‘groundless,’ prosecutor says

A prosecutor has proposed that crime charges against the head of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), Andreas Georgiou, be dropped, saying that allegations by a former employee are groundless.

Yiannis Koutras said an investigation has yielded no evidence of criminal activities by Georgiou nor by another two officials of ELSTAT. The probe was launched after former employee Zoe Georganta alleged that ELSTAT managers inflated the size of Greece’s deficit in order to justify a foreign bailout.
