Big crime needs big crackdown

Every country has a dark criminal underbelly, but when the gangsters start eating away at fundamental institutions and their actions become the status quo or a part of the establishment, then things are very serious indeed.

The case that has been unfolding over the past couple of weeks in regard to a grand-scale heroin-smuggling operation which was uncovered by Greek authorities is ample proof that gangs moving large amounts of ill-gotten gains and other illegal goods and substances have ties with employees working for the state mechanism, with people in the world of business, with shady figures behind sports clubs and such like.

These phenomena cannot be tolerated as just another part of the country’s regular routine. The police and the judicial authorities need to crack down on these organized criminal rings and investigate them thoroughly so they can be taken down.
