Tsipras seeks political allies but few turn up

Leftist SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Thursday called on members of other opposition parties and independent MPs to join forces and derail the government’s economic policies but the audience he drew was smaller than anticipated.

Only the right-wing Independent Greeks, which also opposes the terms of the country’s foreign bailouts, attended the meeting along with independent MPs.

Hopes for a turnout by representatives of Democratic Left, which quit the ruling coalition last summer, were not realized. Tsipras called on attendees to leave their differences aside and “focus on what unites us.”

The first aim, he said, was to overturn plans to part-privatize the Public Power Corporation.
