Firefighters battle dozens of blazes stoked by strong winds
High temperatures and strong winds have sparked dozens of blazes across the country in the past couple of days, with firefighters still battling a fire that began on Thursday in Malesina, Fthiotida, last night.
“The conditions are against us and there is a danger it may spread from the pine forest to residential areas because of the strong winds,” Nikos Liolios, the mayor of Lokrida, a municipality in the vicinity, told Kathimerini.
In Corinth, a blaze that started on Thursday and was brought under partial control on Friday destroyed three homes and a car in the area of Galataki.
A firefighter was also injured.
Another fire was still burning Friday night on the outskirts of Kamatero, northwest of Athens.
