Checks reveal almost 2 pct of Greek firms not insuring workers

In an effort to clamp down on companies not paying social security contributions, almost 14,500 checks were carried out by state inspectors between September 15, 2013 and May 31, 2014, Labor Minister Yiannis Vroutsis said on Monday.

Out of a total of 90,571 employees checked, 1,646 (or 1.8 percent) were found to be uninsured. Vroutsis said that in particularly sectors of the economy, the rate of uninsured workers reached up to 23.4 percent, although this was down from 36.7 percent last year.

The checks carried out over the last few months led to the companies not insuring their employees being fined a total of 16.99 million euros.
