Man, 22, arrested for murder in southern Athens

A 22-year-old man has allegedly admitted to shooting and killing a 30-year-old whose body was found lying in the street in the eastern Athenian suburb of Aghios Dimitrios in the early hours of Saturday, police said on Monday.

The suspect is said to have told investigators he had known the victim for several years but relations had soured dangerously in the past few weeks.

The 22-year-old claimed the victim had called him, saying that he had snatched his younger brother, aged 20, off the street and beaten him.

He demanded a meeting in exchange for the 20-year-old’s release.

The 22-year-old said he grabbed his father’s hunting rifle when he saw the suspect driving up to his home with his brother in the passenger seat and ran out into the street.

He shot at the front of the car as the 30-year-old tried to run him over, he alleged. A second shot hit the driver, who exited the vehicle before collapsing dead in the street.

The 20-year-old brother of the shooter was also injured in the exchange.
