Police seek five suspects after unusual Plaka robbery

Police were seeking five robbers said to have held up a jewelry store in the central Athens district of Plaka in the early hours of Friday morning using a rather unusual strategy.

The owner of the store told police that he opened up in the morning, deactivated the alarm system and turned around to see the five robbers standing in his shop. The intruders appear to have entered the premises by digging a hole through a wall between the shop and the adjacent building. They handcuffed the store owner before packing their bags with jewelry from the display cabinets and fleeing, according to the owner’s account of events.

The shop owner, who was not injured, managed to notify police who launched a search for the assailants, said to be foreign nationals.
