Strong winds fan several wildfires across Greece but no homes at risk

High temperatures and strong winds fanned several wildfires in different parts of the country on Friday though there were no reports of any of the blazes threatening residential areas.

A team of 25 firefighters manning 12 fire engines was dispatched to tackle a blaze in the region of Chloe in Magnisia, central Greece. Four water-dropping aircraft and a helicopter joined the rescue effort.

Twenty firefighters were sent to the Agnanteri, in Thessaly, to extinguish a fire that broke out on forestland. Another 20 firefighters were dispatched to tackle two more blazes, both in the Cretan prefecture of Iraklio, while a blaze that broke out earlier on Friday on Karakonisi, Zakynthos, had been brought under partial control by the afternoon.

Meanwhile a fire that broke out in the premises of a paper factory in Nea Zoi, Elefsina, western Attica, was testing firefighters on Friday afternoon as strong winds in the area made the blaze difficult to contain.
