Man, 21, guilty of killing girlfriend
A 21-year-old was handed a life sentence by a Thessaloniki court on Friday after he was found guilty of murdering his 25-year-old girlfriend last year.
The student at the merchant marine academy was found to have strangled the woman, an air hostess, in a fit of jealousy after they met at a relative’s apartment in Thessaloniki. The woman had asked for the couple to split up after a 2.5-year relationship.
He dumped her body in a stream next to the Athens-Thessaloniki national road. The man then fled Greece, initially traveling to Bulgaria and then Turkey before returning to Thessaloniki six days later to hand himself in at a local police precinct.
The man insisted the woman’s death had been an accident and apologized to her family.
