Students behaving bravely

In response to the chaos that is prevailing in so many university departments across the country as a result of protests against civil sector layoffs, the students’ assembly of the Athens School of Architecture has decided that the summer semester may as well be considered lost.

It was a courageous decision that gives some hope because here we saw the students themselves behaving in a realistic way. They rejected the trick usually pulled by the academic leadership to see the semester through even though classes have not been conducted. Another thing their decision achieved was to lay the onus of the blame on those who are creating the chaos and those who cover up for them by introducing makeshift solutions that benefit the students last.

Mainly, however, it shows that these students are serious about their studies and will no longer tolerate small groups protecting small interests from determining their future. This is something the Ministry of Education and the so-called academics can learn from.
