Athens tax official arrested on bribery charges

A tax official has been arrested in Athens on suspicion of breach of duty and accepting bribes.

The 57-year-old, who works at the Kifissia tax office in northern Athens, is alleged to have demanded 200 euros not to rubber-stamp a fine.

The man was arrested after an accountant alleged that he had demanded the bribe when he went to check on a client’s tax affairs.

The accountant also said that the tax official lied to him about the penalty his client was facing, saying that it was 2,500 euros rather than 600.

The accountant tipped off the police’s internal affairs department and the tax official was arrested after accepting the 200 euros in cash.
