SYRIZA refuses to defend MP over Xeros comment

SYRIZA distanced itself on Wednesday from comments earlier in the week by one of its MPs, Vangelis Diamantopoulos (photo), in which the lawmaker referred to convicted November 17 terrorist Savvas Xeros as having engaged in an “armed struggle.”

“Voters should judge Mr Diamantopoulos,” said SYRIZA spokesman Panos Skourletis.

“The well-known references and regurgitation of supposed links between SYRIZA and terrorism are starting to lose any meaning.”

Diamantopoulos made the comments during a parliamentary debate on legislation paving the way for the construction of maximum-security prisons. SYRIZA opposed the bill, which was passed by Parliament on Tuesday, because it believes prisoners’ rights will be compromised.
