Independent Greeks leader calls for probe into 2009 deficit

Independent Greeks leader Panos Kammenos on Friday called for a parliamentary investigation into allegations that Greece’s 2009 public deficit figure was manipulated.

Kammenos accused the government of “covering” for ex-Prime Minister George Papandreou and former Finance Minister Giorgos Papaconstantinou.

His request came a day after a council of appeals court judges rejected the recommendation of a public prosecutor and ordered a new investigation into the allegations that the size of the deficit was inflated to pave the way for an international bailout.

The claims were first made two years ago by former Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) employee Zoe Georganta but were rejected by the body’s chief, Andreas Georgiou.
