OPINION

Everything but the obvious

Despite the endless promises for change, the magnitude of the harm done to the country by the burdensome bureaucracy that prevails in every part of the state’s functioning does not seem to have registered.

The day-to-day life of ordinary people is proof enough of how bad the situation is.

Anyone wanting to do anything from completing the simplest application to opening a business finds themselves up against a series of bureaucratic obstacles that have been set up over time by the public administration.

On a most basic level, this snarl of red tape leads to a major waste of time and energy that could be put to better use.

Bringing the state up to modern standards will take more than just streamlining employee numbers, putting technology to better use and making cosmetic changes. It mainly means reducing red tape, and that is something we have not seen yet.
