Greece's former procurements chief bailed in bribes case

The former general secretary for procurements at the Defense Ministry, Spyros Travlos, was bailed on Tuesday after appearing before magistrates Gavriil Mallis and Yiannis Stavropoulos, who are investigating allegations that Greek officials took bribes in order to agree to certain armaments purchases.

Travlos, who served under Yiannos Papantoniou when he was defense minister between 2003 and 2004, was asked to post 50,000 euros in bail and not to leave the country.

Travlos is being investigated in connection to two contracts related to the purchase of German-made submarines by the Hellenic Navy and, specifically, the fact that two contracts promising 310 million euros of offset measures were never carried out.
