Kudos and duty

The arrest of fugitive Nikos Maziotis in Athens on Wednesday was undoubtedly a major success for the country’s law enforcement authorities.

Besides all those who participated in the police operation in the city center on Wednesday, there is no doubt that a large number of other people spent long months working hard to track down Maziotis and that the net had been closing on the wanted terrorist prior to his arrest.

Congratulations are therefore in order for all of these people as well as their political superiors.

On the other hand, however, it is impossible to forget that Maziotis, a suspect facing serious charges over terrorist actions, was released from prison and allowed to carry on with his illegal activities due to sheer negligence.

In the end, it took a great effort, a lot of energy as well as a large amount of state funding in order for the case to reach Wednesday’s – unavoidably bloody – conclusion right in the heart of Athens.
