Minister steps in to help blind student rejected by Thessaloniki university

Education Minister Andreas Loverdos (photo) on Thursday had to step in to ensure that a visually impaired honor student can attend university.

The 18-year-old had been rejected from the Physics Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki when he applied on the grounds that regulations prohibit people with upper mobility problems or visual impairment from studying at the department.

Loverdos ordered that the university assign a member of staff to act as the young man’s guide during classes.

He also said that such regulations will undergo a revision on an institutional level.
