Samaras to have talks with Italy’s Renzi on Florence visit

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras was due in Florence on Friday for a private visit during which he is expected to hold talks with his Italian counterpart Matteo Renzi.

The two leaders are expected to discuss issues of mutual concern such as maritime and immigration policies. Renzi, whose country assumed the EU’s rotating presidency from Greece earlier this month, has called for a relaxation of the provisions of the Stability and Growth Pact.

Commenting ahead of Samaras’ Florence visit on Friday morning in an interview with Skai television, government spokeswoman Sofia Voultepsi said it was important that countries with “similar problems” seek to forge alliances.

The Italian premier is to host a lunch for Samaras and his wife before accompanying the pair on a visit of the city, sources said.
