Former PM backs plebiscites

Former Prime Minister George Papandreou on Saturday called for voters to be given greater access to the political decision-making process through referendums.

Speaking at the 15th Symi Symposium, held on the island of Spetses, urged leaders to adopt a more direct form of democracy.

Papandreou stood down as premier in late 2011 shortly after declaring that Greek would hold a plebiscite on the terms of its second bailout. During his address on Spetses, Papandreou also lamented the European Union’s reluctance to address structural problems and rely on austerity policies.
