Minister warns bakers not weighing fresh bread will be fined

Deputy Development Minister Gerasimos Giakoumatos warned on Monday that bakers not abiding by a new law requiring them to weigh fresh bread before they sell it would face fines.

Giakoumatis said that authorities would be checking if bakeries are weighing their bread after the law came into force on Monday.

It is one of the measures recommended to Greece by the Organization for Cooperation and Development (OECD) as part of its “tool kit,” which was adopted earlier this year.

The ministry has asked that customers demand their bread be weighed and that they be informed of its price per kilos. It said that any complaints should be registered with the General Secretariat for Consumers at 1520.
