Bid to grant the disabled full college access
Education Minister Andreas Loverdos Monday asked university and technical college directors to lift obstacles to disabled applicants studying at higher education institutions.
In a letter, Loverdos urged the managers to “revoke provisions… which violate the principle of equality and the right to higher education.”
The move came less than a week after he stepped in to ensure that a partially blind honor student can attend university. The 18-year-old had been rejected from the Physics Department of Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University due to regulations prohibiting people with upper-body mobility problems or visual impairment from studying at the department.
Loverdos ordered the university to assign a member of staff to act as the young man’s guide during classes, noting that the ministry would cover the costs.
