Tale of Greek woman gone rogue to premiere at Locarno
“A Blast,” a new feature film by director Syllas Tzoumerkas, will premiere at the 67th Locarno Film Festival at the beginning of August.
The movie, winner of the Eurimages Co-production Development Award, was filmed in Athens, Pieria (northern Greece) and Hamburg, Germany, and was co-produced by film studios in Greece, Germany and the Netherlands.
Maria, played by Aggeliki Papoulia, has always been a good mother, daughter and wife. But in “A Blast” she suddenly goes rogue, taking her life into her own hands. Running down a highway, Maria leaves a fire and a bag full of money behind her and faces the endless road ahead.
“In the turbulent years of the collapse of the Greek economy ‘A Blast’ shows what it means to realize that everything you believe in is false and to do something about it,” Tzoumerkas, now in his mid-30s, said in a director’s note. “Unwilling to reconcile herself with her lost dignity, the lack of attention and her embattled love for life, she strikes out. She strikes out against herself, her past and her loved ones, her country and the perceptions of others regarding her gender, in a furious battle for the truth that is inside and around her.”
