FYROM’s foreign minister does not see progress in name talks

The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) does not expect a visit next week by United Nations mediator Matthew Nimetz to bring any new proposals for a solution to the country’s name dispute with Greece, Foreign Minister Nikola Poposki said on Thursday.

Nimetz will be in Skopje on July 28 and 29 before spending the next two days in Athens.

Speaking at an event in Skopje, Poposki also said he was downbeat on the prospects of the dispute being resolved soon.

“Without any political motivation in Athens and without any commitment from the bigger states that are members of NATO and the European Union, we cannot expect any movement on the name issue,” he said, adding that the attention of Greek politicians is focused on domestic issues due to the economic crisis.
