Council of State deems university reform plan legal

The Council of State issued a ruling on Thursday deeming the government’s “Athena” plan for tertiary education reform legal.

Introduced just over a year ago with the aim of merging and shutting down of dozens of university and technical college departments, a number of institutions had appealed against the program.

However, Greece’s highest administrative court rejected their case, saying the scheme and the 36 presidential decrees needed to merge or close some of more than 500 university and technical college departments were in line with the country’s constitution.
