Prison guards demand meeting with public order minister

Prison guards on Friday warned of extended action unless their union is granted a meeting with recently appointed Public Order Minister Vassilis Kikilias to voice its concerns about working conditions and plans to build maximum-security cells at Domokos Prison in central Greece.

Prison guards have been on strike for over a week and claim that their request for a meeting over a month ago has gone unanswered.

“We wonder whether the [ministry’s] indifference is toward us or toward the multiple problems faced by Greek prisons and by those who work at them more generally. If the former is the case then it’s not too bad. We are afraid, though, that it’s the latter,” the Federation of Prison Workers (OSYE) said on Friday.
