Two people were killed near Sparta in the Peloponnese on Saturday morning when the small single-engine airplane they were flying in crashed shortly after taking off from Lefkochoma airport.
The aircraft came down about 15 meters beyond the airport grounds.
The 52-year-old pilot and a passenger were killed instantly.
The Civil Aviation Authority told Kathimerini that the aircraft had taken off without submitting a flight plan, which is against aviation regulations.
Crash investigators were sent to the airport, whose ownership has been handed to the local municipality, following the crash.
Sources told Kathimerini that since Sparta Municipality took over the airport it did not have a license and was officially not being used for flights.
