Authorities have demolished 170 illegal buildings so far this year in the Peloponnese, Western Greece and the Ionian islands, according to figures seen by Kathimerini.
The structures were built on the coast, beaches and forested areas. Local authorities received the go-ahead from the Environment Ministry to knock them down. So far, 643 decisions for the demolition of illegal buildings in these areas have been issued.
Some of the cases dated back as many as 20 years.
