Academics fail to reverse cuts

The Council of State has deemed legal the cuts imposed over the past few years on university teaching staff salaries despite recent judgments forcing the government to reverse reductions to the wages of judges and members of the armed forces and emergency services.

Judges found that the cuts to the academics’ wages were in the national interest because the government had to trim the public deficit. The court deemed the constitution does not stipulate that the wages of university lecturers and professors should be tied to those of judges, which are the benchmark for many public sector jobs. The decision will be referred to the Council of State’s plenary.
