Draghi to meet Junker ahead of ECB meeting

European Central Bank President Mario Draghi will meet the EU Commission’s incoming president, Jean-Claude Juncker, in Luxembourg on Wednesday, an ECB spokesman said on Tuesday.

The spokesman did not reveal what was on the agenda for the meeting, which will take place a day before the eurozone central bank’s governors gather for their regular monthly policy meeting in Frankfurt.

The ECB is widely expected to keep interest rates unchanged on Thursday as it waits for the impact of unprecedented measures announced in June to unfold.

In Athens on Monday, Juncker had said that Europe must remain “vigilant” against new financial challenges as it struggles to overcome the lingering effects of the debt crisis.

The day after Brussels gave the green light for a state rescue of stricken Portuguese banking giant Banco Espirito Santo, Juncker warned the recession-hit region remained vulnerable to fresh economic strains. [AFP]
