Harbor cooperation

Greece has always been a crossroads between East and West. Now, as the countries of Africa move toward achieving their full potential, Greece is in the fortunate position of being able to exploit its place between North and South.

The rapid development of the container terminal in the port of Piraeus, by China’s Cosco company, and the linking of the port to the national railway network, has made our country an important regional hub for transportation and trade. Piraeus is able to handle ever greater numbers of containers headed for Europe, but it is also able to export to the broader region and further abroad. This means that not only can Greece be a gateway into Europe but companies based here can also export easily to other regions – especially Africa. The industrial zone near the harbor could attract manufacturers with an eye on exports.

Chinese ambassador Zou Xiaoli has proposed that Greece and China work together in expanding contacts with African countries. This idea must be developed fully. It has unlimited potential.
